The Well

A wellness resource dedicated to providing people of color resources and referrals to live their best life.

When you’re not represented in a certain space you don’t even know the practice exists. I love wellness and what it can do for one’s mind body and spirit, however I know it can be hard to seek out something, when you don’t feel included in that space. The Well will show you people of color in the wellness space and the gifts that they offer. The well is your source for wellness products and experiences created by BIPOC.

10 Tips for Self-Care to Help Manage Anxiety

2020 has been a year that will no doubt go down in history. You and your loved ones have experienced a lot so far this year. It should come as no surprise that you or someone you know may be dealing with increased stress and anxiety. If that’s that case you’re in luck. I want to share 10 tips for how to manage stress and anxiety during difficult times. With these 10 tips I hope one or many of them help you or someone you love find peace and relaxation.

1. Get Outside

It is scientifically proven that being outside (especially in green spaces or by water) is one of the fastest ways to improve your happiness! It’s guaranteed to lower stress and blood pressure almost instantly

2. Get Creative

Creativity releases anxiety, depression, and stress. It can also help you process trauma. Write, draw, sing, dance, paint – find a creative outlet to help manage the negative emotions that may arise.

3. Self-Massage

Work from head to toe, starting with a scalp massage. Use your favorite oil and give yourself a rub down. It will help relieve tension and you’ll instantly feel relaxed and calm.

4. Read a Book

When was the last time you read a book? Research suggests that people who keep their brains active by reading or playing mentally challenging games like chess are 2.5 times less likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease than those who spend their down time on less stimulating activities.

5. Meditation

The most proven way to self-heal and release thoughts that no longer serve you, is through meditation. There are several forms of meditation you can try. Check out apps like Insight Timer, Calm, and HeadSpace to begin! Alternatively, you can join me every Sunday on IG Live for a 15-20 minute guided meditation at 9pm EST. Follow me @iamnamastej.

6. Therapy

If you’ve never explored therapy, now is a great time to start! Check out BetterHelp or Therapy for Black Girls to find a therapist near you. If cost is a concern don’t let that be a barrier to getting some great mental health help. Speak with therapists to learn about all possible payment options they may have to offer.

7. Exercise

Exercise is scientifically proven to help reduce anxiety and stress. If you don’t prefer high intensity, you can get the blood flowing by going for a light walk, doing yoga, or doing this circuit:

  • 5 Burpees
  • 5 Push Ups
  • 10 Crunches
  • 15 Jumping Jacks
  • 20 Squats

8. Social Detoxes

It’s no secret that social media/the news/and any other media outlet can be anxiety producing. So, block time in your calendar to take breaks from social, or if you’re up to the challenge try going a day or longer without checking social media. Whatever time block you choose give it a try. A break from online can do wonders for your overall health.

9. Yoga

I’ve been practicing yoga since 2004 and became certified (RYT 200) in vinyasa yoga. Now more than ever yoga is needed to be shared with the masses. Yoga is an ancient practice that unites the mind, body, and spirit. With all that is occurring in the world, yoga allows you to go inward and devote some time to yourself. A time for self-care, which I like to call self-love. Yoga helps you feel balanced mentally and physically. I offer yoga classes to individuals and groups (online/in person). Please contact me at, info@namastej.com  to book a session.

10. Feel & Release

Give yourself permission feel everything and release it all.  Cry, scream into a pillow, take a nap, speak your truth, and embrace all of you. Put the cape away and lean into your emotions. You are not weak, you are human. Have grace and compassion for yourself as you would a dear friend or child. Be kind to yourself.
